Description
Walmsley School, located to the south of the Unitarian Chapel, is a school building dated 1851, as indicated by its datestone, which also features a runic inscription beneath. The school was extended in 1906. It is constructed from rock-faced stone and has a slate roof. The building is one storey high and consists of six bays, with the end bay being recessed and lower than the others, and a three-bay extension attached. It features a cornice and coped gables. The Tudor-headed windows have label moulds and small-paned glazing with opening lights. There is a gabled porch topped with a ball finial, which contains a Tudor-headed entrance with a label mould and an eight-panel door, along with a plaque above it. The sixth bay has a segmental-headed entrance. The building also has octagonal gable-end stacks and a central louvre. The extension includes large casement windows and is noted as having no special interest. The school is included in the listing for its group value.
