Description

Numbers 17-29 on Frederick Street in Sunderland is a terrace of 13 houses, now used as offices, built around 1830. The houses are made of garden wall bond brick, with some sections painted and featuring painted ashlar dressings. Number 20 has been refaced in cement to imitate rusticated stone. The buildings have a Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys and wrought-iron balustrades on the steps. Each house is two storeys tall, with basements in all except for No. 29, which is obscured by a one-storey shop at No. 27 on Borough Road. Each house has two windows and steps leading up to Sunderland-style doorways located on the right side. The doorcases feature pilasters with a Greek fret that supports a plain entablature above six-panelled double doors, which open to reveal four-panelled inner doors with overlights. Some doors and ground floor windows have been renewed in Nos. 20, 23, 24, and 25. No. 29 has a doorcase with a lost cornice on the right and an inserted entrance on the left. The steps include plain wrought-iron railings and handrails, and dwarf walls with area railings were being renewed at the time of the survey.
