Description
Numbers 17-23 comprise a terrace of seven houses, largely used as offices, with attached steps and railings. The main block dates from around the 1840s, with number 23 being slightly later, from around the 1850s. The houses are constructed of English garden wall bond brick, with number 23 having painted brick, and painted ashlar dressings. They have Welsh slate roofs with brick chimneys. Stone steps, some of which have been renewed, lead up to six-panelled doors (renewed at numbers 21 and 22), set within surrounds of pilasters and entablatures, featuring Greek key decoration to numbers 17, 19, 20, and 22. The surround has been removed from number 21. The windows have wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills; number 20 retains some original glazing bars, number 23 has all glazing bars, while the others feature renewed sashes or casements. Number 17 has a canted bay window extending through the basement and two storeys. Number 18 has a basement opening with boarded shutters, and a third storey has been added. Dormers with hipped roofs and slate-hung sides are present at numbers 17 and 22, a small gabled dormer at numbers 21 and 19, and a small square-headed dormer at number 23. Some transverse ridge chimneys are visible. At number 23, there are wrought-iron step handrails and approximately one metre of spike-headed garden railings projecting from the steps.
