Description
Bethesda Free Church, originally known as Bethesda Free Chapel, was built between 1844 and 1845, with side galleries added in 1852. It was designed by AA Rees, who is commemorated with a memorial inside the church. The building features a garden wall bond brick construction with limestone rubble returns, a rendered rear, an ashlar sandstone plinth, and painted ashlar dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof.
The exterior faces west towards the street and consists of two stories with three windows and set-back sides. The central pedimented section has a recessed bay with steps leading up to a six-panelled double door, which is topped by a two-pane overlight that is recessed under a cornice supported by scroll brackets. Above the door is a renewed window with a shallow segmental head set in a wedge stone lintel and a projecting stone sill. The flanking bays project slightly and contain similar windows, all three bays are situated under the pediment, which features a bracketed top panel with the words "BETHESDA FREE CHAPEL" in low relief at the center. The pediment itself displays the date "1844" in low relief letters. The set-back sections on either side are blank, showcasing a prominent eaves cornice and blocking course.
Inside, the church has fluted iron columns, most of which are now cased in, supporting a gallery that runs around three sides of the interior. There is also a baptismal pool. The pews have been renewed. The church was funded by its founder, Arthur Augustus Rees, who purchased the land from a local Quaker family, the Cable Wilsons.
