Description

No. 20 on Villiers Street is a former school, now used as offices, built in 1849 for the adjacent Baptist chapel at No. 19. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and has two storeys with five windows. There are internal steps leading up to a panelled door topped by a high overlight featuring glazing bars, all framed by block-rusticated Tuscan attached columns and an entablature. The windows, which have renewed glazing bars and pivoting central lights, are adorned with lugged architraves. The ground floor windows feature panelled labels extending from moulded sills down to the plinth, while the first-floor windows are set on a sill string. The building has rusticated quoins that are interrupted by a first-floor band, and an eaves entablature with a bracketed gutter cornice.
