Description

This is a medieval archway located in a wall to the west of the public gardens in Sunderland. The arch is set in a 19th-century brick wall and features a wrought-iron screen, which may date from the 19th or 20th century. The archway was relocated from the outbuildings of Bishopwearmouth Rectory, which was demolished in the late 19th century. It has a chamfered pointed arch with a restored keystone and irregular projecting stones on the eastern side, integrated into the garden wall. The opening is filled with a Gothic-patterned screen.
