Description

Numbers 31, 32, and 33 are three houses, now used as offices, located on Norfolk Street in Sunderland. They were built around 1840 and feature steps, dwarf walls, an area cover, and railings. The houses are constructed of Flemish bond brick, with painted basements, incised stucco on No. 31, and brick on the others, all adorned with painted ashlar dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and includes brick chimneys.

The buildings are two storeys high with a basement and have three windows each. There are steps leading up to Sunderland-type doors on the left side of Nos. 31 and 33, which have been altered to fold back and create panelled reveals for the inner doors and overlights. The inner door of No. 32 is also panelled, while the others have been renewed. The doorcases feature Tuscan pilasters and entablatures with shallow dentils on Nos. 31 and 32. The sash windows have wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills, with some windows renewed and glazing bars present on the lower sashes of the first floor in No. 33.

The roof includes transverse ridges with chimneys at the right end of each house, and No. 32 has chimney pots. There is a gabled dormer with slate-hung sides, front three-pane sashes, and single-pane lights on the returns. No. 32 has two large roof lights inserted, while No. 33 has two smaller flush lights. The ashlar steps are complemented by plain iron balustrades with flat handrails, spiral-ended where they do not connect to the front railings, which are spike-headed. Additionally, No. 33 features a curved area cover on the right.
