Description

The statue of John Candlish MP, located at the south end of Central Avenue in Sunderland, was created in 1875 by the sculptor C. Bacon, who signed and dated the work. The statue is slightly larger than life size and depicts Candlish in contemporary dress. It stands on a square plinth with a moulded stepped base made of polished porphyritic granite. An inscription on the statue reads: "JOHN CANDLISH M.P. BORN 1815 DIED 1874." The statue was cast by H. Young & Co. Art Founders in Pimlico.
