Description
The war memorial located on Burdon Road in Sunderland was built around 1925 to commemorate those who served in World War I. It was designed by R.A. Ray, an artist and sculptor. The memorial is made of granite and features a bronze figure of the Angel of Victory, which holds a globe atop a tall Tuscan column. The column is adorned with a laurel leaf band at its base and an egg and dart echinus.
The tall moulded plinth includes carved laurel wreaths and upturned torches in low relief, with inscriptions on the west side reading "A TRIBUTE TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD," on the north side "1914-1918," and on the south side "1939-1945." The memorial is accessed by four steps leading up to a platform, which is flanked by dwarf walls that have nail-head studs in the coping.
Surrounding the memorial are wrought-iron railings and gates featuring a cross-in-circle motif, with paired principal uprights and top rails. Additionally, there are four lamp standards positioned a short distance from the corners of the memorial, which are contemporary to the structure and are listed individually.
