Description

Numbers 11-17 on John Street are a terrace of houses, now used as offices, built between 1820 and 1850. The buildings are constructed of English bond brick with painted ashlar basements and dressings, topped with Welsh slate roofs and ridge brick chimneys. Each house has ashlar dwarf walls and features cast and wrought-iron balustrades and railings. They are two storeys tall with a basement and have three windows each. The basement displays channelled rustication.

Steps lead up to doorcases that are framed by engaged fluted Doric columns, which support an entablature adorned with a palmette and anthemion frieze. The doors are double panelled, with plain overlights, except for No.15, which has radiating glazing bars. The central panels of the doors feature roundels set in reveals with similar panelling. Notable details include a pediment with foliage on No.11 and square pilasters on No.12. The doors from No.16 have been removed, and alterations have been made to the ground floor of No.15.

The sash windows, some of which have horizontal glazing bars while others have had their bars removed, are topped with wedge stone lintels and have sill strings. Moulded gutter cornices are present, along with transverse ridge chimneys. No.12 features a gabled canted dormer. The steps are accompanied by railings that include a central chrysanthemum motif, with the front railings supported by piers formed by clusters of four posts.
