Description

Numbers 25 to 31 on Byrom Street are a terrace row of four town houses, now used as offices, dating from the late 18th century and altered over time. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, featuring back extensions. They rise three storeys above cellars and have a window arrangement of 3+2+3+3.

The houses have a moulded gutter cornice and doorways located to the left, all featuring 4-centred arches with attached Gothick doorcases made up of clustered shafts that end in pinnacles and ogival heads with finials. The doorcases at numbers 25 and 27 include delicate Gothick tracery in the fanlights. The sashed windows have raised sills and flat-arched heads; those at numbers 25 and 27 are all 12-paned, including a tripartite sash at the ground floor of number 27, while the other windows mostly lack glazing bars. Large multiple-flue chimneys cross the ridge.

At the rear of number 31, there is an attached early 19th-century chapel with gabled ends, bricked-up openings, and coped parapets. The interiors have not been inspected. This terrace forms a group with similar houses located on St John Street.
