Description
Nos. 139 to 159 on Grainger Street are shops and houses, now functioning solely as shops. They were built around 1836, likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. It has four storeys, comprising 19 bays and a one-bay curved corner that leads to the former High Friar Street, now part of the Eldon Shopping Centre.
The ground floor has been altered, while the first floor showcases tripartite windows in the end pavilions, which are adorned with Tuscan pilasters and an entablature that includes a pedimented projecting centre. Each floor above features tripartite windows, with architraves and bracketed sills on the second floor and plain reveals on the third. The central pavilion has architraves framing the first and second-floor windows, with cornices—central pedimented on the first floor, and bracketed sills on the second floor, while the third floor has plain reveals. All windows are sashes, some of which include glazing bars. The plainer intermediate sections have pilasters and an entablature for the first-floor windows, a sill string and entablature on the second floor, and a prominent cornice at the top, along with a blocking course.
