Description
Nos. 2 and 4 Mosley Street is a bank building, now used as offices, constructed in 1908 by Newcombe and Newcombe for Alliance Assurance Co. Ltd. It is built from sandstone ashlar with a pink granite plinth and porch, and features a roof that is not visible. The building is designed in the Palladian style and consists of three storeys with five bays, along with a three-bay curved entrance section on the left.
The ground floor is elevated, with a plinth that is deeper on the right due to the slope. It includes a right-end door with an overlight set in an architrave, and a left corner entrance supported by Tuscan columns, flanked by narrow windows. This entrance has a recessed double door and an overlight with radiating glazing bars, all beneath a swagged frieze and cornice. Above the entrance, there is a giant Ionic Order featuring a pedimented window on the first floor and a second-floor window in a lugged architrave.
The elevation facing Mosley Street has tall, round-headed windows on the ground floor, with pediments above the first-floor windows, except for the outer bays which have swagged segmental-headed surrounds. The second floor features lugged architraves, and the building is topped with a deep modillioned cornice and tall, corniced, ashlar chimneys.
