Description

The National Westminster Bank, located at No. 26 Mosley Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, was built between 1870 and 1872 by architect Gibson for the National Provincial Bank. This bank features a vermiculate sandstone basement and a sandstone ashlar façade with pink granite nook shafts around the ground floor openings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. Designed in the Palladian style, it is a corner building with three storeys and five bays, plus an entrance bay that is set back to the right.

The rusticated ground floor includes a central door with an overlight set within a pedimented doorcase. In the entrance bay, there are doors framed in a lugged architrave with the words "BANK CHAMBERS" incised above. The ground floor also has round-headed fixed lights adorned with archivolts, imposts, and sill strings, along with a panelled band beneath. The first-floor windows are framed by pedimented Ionic aedicules, while the second-floor windows are set within giant Roman Doric architraves.

On the frieze facing Mosley Street, the inscription reads "NATIONAL PROVINCIAL BANK OF ENGLAND MDCCLXXI," and on the left return facing Dean Street, it states "THE NATIONAL PROVINCIAL BANK OF ENGLAND LIMD ESTABLISHED MDCCXXXIII." The building is topped with a high blocking course and features tall, corniced ashlar chimneys. The rear of the building is adjacent to No. 10 St. Nicholas Churchyard.
