Description
Nos. 5-8 Broad Street is an office building dating from around 1830, with internal reconstruction that took place around 1970. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features lateral ashlar stacks, with the roof not visible. The building is designed in the Greek Revival style and has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, arranged in a double-depth plan with a six-window range.
The symmetrical front has a moulded plinth that serves as the base for four giant pilasters, leading up to a frieze and dentil cornice, with a central balustrade section. Below the first-floor sill band, there is a relief of palmettes. The entrance is slightly recessed and flanked by attached, fluted Ionic columns supporting an entablature, with double 16-panel doors and an 8-pane overlight above. The windows are arranged in a 2:2:2 pattern and feature battered architraves, console cornices on the ground floor, console pediments above the middle first-floor windows, and eared architraves for the remaining windows. The window styles include 6/6-pane horned sashes, 3/6-panes on the second floor, and a 20th-century attic storey set back behind the balustrade.
To the left of the main building is a single-storey porch with half pilasters supporting an entablature, double 6-panel doors, and a grille above. The interior was completely rebuilt behind the façade around 1970 but retains elements that match the Old Council House from 1822-27, including matching capitals and a ground-floor frieze.
