Description
59 and 61 Broad Street is a pair of attached offices built around 1850, designed in a Neoclassical style. The buildings are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature a double-depth plan. Each office has three storeys and a one-window range. The symmetrical front displays 20th-century shop fronts, with the left-hand one boarded up at the time of review and the right-hand one featuring a doorway on the right side and a timber cornice. Above the shop fronts are pilasters with acanthus capitals, a frieze, and fluted brackets supporting a deep bracketed cornice. The left-hand return has similar detailing and random ashlar. At the base of the pilasters are small pedestals, with cast-iron railings decorated with palmettes in between. The windows are framed with architraves; the first floor has moulded consoles supporting cornices and French windows, while the second floor features eared 6/6-pane sashes, and the third floor has eared 3/3-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected. The return has similar stonework to the Grand Hotel, and it is suggested that the pair may have been rebuilt around 1869.
