Description
Nos. 26 and 28 Watergate is a house that has been converted into an office. It likely dates from the early 17th century, with an addition from the mid to late 17th century, and was partly rebuilt in the early to mid-19th century. The building is timber framed, with sections rebuilt in red brick, and features a slate roof. It has an L-plan layout, consisting of two framed bays and probably a later one-bay wing at the rear.
The structure is two storeys high and has a dentil brick eaves cornice. There is a central brick ridge stack and an integral brick corner stack on the rear wing. On the first floor, there are a pair of boxed 4-pane sash windows that do not have horns. The late 19th-century shop front includes a pair of plate-glass windows, a pair of central recessed glazed doors, a set-back half-glazed door leading to a side passage on the right, and deep fascias above.
At the rear, the framed wall is visible. The gable end of the wing displays an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts. The interior has only been partly inspected, but the rear wing features a chamfered beam with ogee stops and a corner fireplace.
