Description

Nos. 1-9 York Street is a building that was originally the National Provincial Bank, constructed around 1890. It is made of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings, a granite plinth, and columns, topped with a slate roof. The building is designed in the Renaissance Revival style and features three ornate stone side wall stacks.

The exterior includes a plinth, pilasters, cornices at the first floor and eaves, a coped parapet, and a single coped gable. It has two storeys plus attics and a five-window range. The windows are cross casements with stone mullions. The corner entrance is marked by octagonal piers with ball finials, flanking a four-light canted oriel window adorned with a strapwork balustrade, crest, and finial. Above the entrance is a moulded round-arched doorway with late 20th-century double doors and decorated spandrels, along with a carved stone coat of arms above it. The doorway is framed by two round granite piers with dies.

On the left side, facing High Street, there are octagonal flanking piers with ball finials. Above this area is a single light round-headed window with a segmental pediment on brackets, and above it, an elaborate pedimented dormer featuring a tiny oriel bow window. Below, a three-light cross casement is flanked by round granite piers with dies.

The right side, facing York Street, has rusticated pilasters on the ground floor. There is a square projection with two three-light windows on each floor, with the lower ones being taller. To the left, there is a three-light window and below it, two taller two-light windows. To the right, a flush single-storey range has two three-light windows, and adjacent to it is a square-headed doorway flanked by double pilasters. Above this doorway is a moulded panel and a small two-light window with a balcony. Above and behind this range, there is a set-back clerestory featuring two three-light mullioned windows. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value.
