Description
This is a sundial from the mid-18th century located in the garden, 16 metres east of Shildon farmhouse. It is made of sandstone and features a moulded square base. The sundial has dials inscribed with the names 'Rome, Italy', 'Bordeaux', and 'Mexico, Acapulco', and it carries a near-life-size figure of Father Time, who is lightly draped and holding a winged hourglass. On the back of the figure, there are broken wings and a cartouche that includes a scythe and a self-swallowing serpent. The figure supports a facetted block that has additional dials, with two inscribed 'MADAGASCAR' and 'Ephesus, Asia'.
