Description

White House Farmhouse is a 17th-century house with a T-plan layout, located in Corbridge. The building features a door surround dated 1684 with the initials I M, representing John and Mary Cook. An early 19th-century north wing was added, with alterations made around 1950. The structure is constructed of rubble, rendered and whitewashed, and topped with a stone slate roof.

The south elevation has two storeys and three bays. There is a left-of-centre renewed door set in a heavily-moulded surround. Above the door is a 2-light window, with 3-light windows in the side bays; the window surrounds and the mullions of the 3-light windows are of raised rounded section. A well-preserved sundial with a re-cut date of 1702 is positioned above the door. The gables are coped with moulded kneelers, and there are stepped end stacks.

The left return of the building features a chamfered window in the attic. The right return has similar windows on the first floor and in the attic; to the right, a two-storey, two-bay rear wing has a central flush-panelled door in a slightly projecting gabled porch, with 2-light windows on the left similar to those on the south front, and renewed 16-pane sash windows in stone surrounds to the right.

Inside, the farmhouse retains a contemporary fireplace and doorway leading to the rear wing, both with moulded surrounds, as well as old ceiling beams.
