Description

Aydon South Farmhouse is a house dating to the 17th century, with an east wing that is dated 1722 on the doorhead, and a main block rebuilt in the late 18th century. The main block is constructed of squared stone, while the wings are of rubble with dressings. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate, and there are two brick stacks. The south elevation is in two parts: the main block comprises three storeys and two bays, with a flush-panelled door and a five-pane overlight to the right. Most windows are 16-pane sashes, except for two second-floor windows with eight panes. There are end stacks, with the left one rebuilt in brick. The lower east wing to the right has two storeys and two irregular bays, with a moulded first-floor string. A renewed six-pane sash is in an older doorway with a flattened triangular head to the right, and a 20th-century window is to the left. Above this are a 16-pane sash and a narrow two-pane sash, both in stone surrounds, with a blocked mullioned window to the left. A 20th-century brick ridge stack is present. The right return shows a chamfered window with old iron bars in the gable. A set-back section to the right shows the end of an outshut with a blocked two-light mullioned window. Similar windows are found in the north wing.

Inside the east wing, there are moulded first-floor ceiling beams and the roof shows principal-rafter trusses and collars, with a ridge carried between overlapped ends of principals. The thick (0.80 metre) rear wall of the main block is likely part of the original house, predating the addition of the north wing in the 17th and early 18th centuries and the east wing.
