Description

The sundial located in Albert Park, Middlesbrough, was created in 1876 and 1879 by John Smith from Stockton for H.W.F. Bolckow, an ironmaster. It is made of sandstone ashlar and features a bronze gnomon in a Gothic style. The sundial is inscribed on a painted tablet, which is dated 1876 and set under a segmental-pointed recess surrounded by a pilaster-and-gable design. There is a roundel in the gable that is dated 1879.

The deep plinth includes gabled angle buttresses and a slate tablet that reads: "Equation of Time for Every 5th Day of the Month," followed by a table. The sundial has three concentric dials that indicate time in New York, Melbourne, and the park itself. Greek mottoes are present in the spandrels, and a square border is inscribed with the phrase: "TIME BY MOMENTS STEALS AWAY FIRST THE HOUR THEN THE DAY." Above the dials, there is a diagram of the solar system, along with twelve signs of the zodiac in an oval border. Below the sundial, there is a verse that is now partly eroded. The reverse side features a blank panel in a similar surround. The sundial was noted to be dilapidated at the time of resurvey.
