Description
The South African War Memorial, located in Albert Park, was built in 1904 by F.W. Doyle Jones from Hartlepool. It is constructed from red Peterhead granite and features York stone steps along with bronze tablets. The memorial is designed as an obelisk, adorned with linked volutes and bay-leaf swags at its base, which sits on a tapered pedestal with a heavily-moulded cornice. The base is moulded and stepped, showcasing bay-leaf and cyma-recta moulding on the top step, and there are three plain lower steps. Sculptured tablets on the north and south faces of the die represent fame on the south side and patriotism on the north. The names of the fallen are inscribed on a raised-lettered tablet on the west face. This memorial is included for its historic interest.
