Description

The garden walls with attached outbuildings and railings, located 150 metres east of Newbiggin Hall, date from the early 19th century. They are constructed of brick in English garden wall bond, with sandstone dressings and slate roofs, complemented by cast-iron railings. The trapezoidal walled garden features railings on the south side that overlap with returns. A tall wall with a flat stone coping ends in square piers, and each side wall has a taller section that contains vertical-panelled doors. Similar doors are located on either side of the site of a greenhouse at the centre of the heated north wall. The dwarf stone wall is topped with spearhead rails and includes a large stone trough at the centre. At the rear of the north wall, there is a central pent outbuilding with a boarded door, flanked by Yorkshire sash windows and C20 double doors to the left. Each side has two gabled furnace houses with boarded double doors, coped gables, moulded kneelers, and stone finials. Inside each furnace house, there are a pair of round-arched furnace openings, and the walls between have three tiers of stone slab covers for heating ducts, each fitted with an iron ring.
