Description
The garden walls, railings, and attached outbuildings to the east of Whalton House date from the early 19th century. They are constructed of brick in English Garden Wall bond 1 and 4, with the external face and outbuildings made of roughly-squared stone. The south wall features squared stone with cast-iron railings and cut dressings, while the roofs of the outbuildings are covered in Welsh slate. The rectangular walled garden has external outbuildings at both ends of the north wall.
The tall wall has flat coping that ramps down to small pyramid-capped piers at the southern corners. The low south wall has slightly-raised coping that supports spiked railings with vase finials. There are single broad pilaster-like external buttresses on both the east and west sides. A doorway near the north end of the west wall has an earlier chamfered lintel that has been re-set. The east outbuilding features a cart entrance under a timber lintel, while the west outbuilding has two boarded doors, both with hip-ended roofs. The railings were noted to be in poor condition at the time of the survey.
