Description
The Norham War Memorial is located on a small triangular green at the north end of Pedwell Way, near other Grade II listed buildings. This memorial features a 5-meter tall sandstone cross, which is adorned with interlace patterns carved in relief on the upper parts of the front face. Below these patterns, the lower part of the cross shaft displays the main dedicatory inscription, with letters cut in relief that read: "ERECTED IN MEMORY/ OF OFFICERS, NCOS AND/ MEN OF NORHAM WHO/ FELL IN THE WAR OF/ 1914-1918/ (NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
The last name is inscribed on the riser of the cross's moulded foot, along with the phrase "LEST WE FORGET." The cross is set upon a low base that bears the inscription "THOSE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES THAT WE MIGHT LIVE," which stands on a low square step. The memorial is surrounded by nine low stone pyramidal pillars, each square in shape, which support pairs of metal bars. Paving slabs in front of the memorial connect the grass to the cross.
