Description
The Etchingham War Memorial is a Portland stone memorial cross, approximately 3 meters tall, located in a roundabout on the path leading from the road to the south porch of the Parish Church of St Nicholas and St Mary, which is a Grade I-listed building. The memorial features a blind wheel-head cross with an octagonal shaft that rests on a three-tiered plinth, which is supported by a three-stepped, octagonal base. A reversed sword is incised into the front face of the cross.
An inscription on the front face of the foot of the cross shaft reads "UNTIL THE DAY DAWN." Additionally, there is a low relief inscription around the upper circular tier of the plinth that states, "AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." The main dedicatory inscription is incised into the front three faces of the octagonal middle tier, which reads, "MCMIV TO THE MCMXIX GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF MEN OF ETCHINGHAM WHO GAVE UP THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR." The names of the deceased are recorded on the remaining faces of the plinth.
A small rectangular stone tablet has been added to the upper step of the base, which carries the dedication for the Second World War, stating, "IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES 1939 – 1945 (NAMES)."
