Description

The Kennels, located 500 metres north of Beaufront Woodhead Farmhouse, is a building comprising kennels and an attached cottage, dating from the early 19th century and constructed in two phases. It features coursed squared rubble with tooled-and-margined quoins and dressings, while the yard walls are made of brick and include cast iron gates and railings. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and the building is arranged in an L-plan.

The south elevation is a single storey with three bays, showcasing large two-light mullioned windows that have 24-pane part-opening casements set in chamfered surrounds. The hipped roof has two stepped and banded ridge stacks. The left return, facing the road, includes a rear outshut from a later west range, which has two boarded doors and windows, including two 9-pane casements, all in chamfered surrounds. The rear elevation of the west range features twin attached yards with railings at the front, as well as piers with pyramidal caps flanking the gates at the right end.

Notably, the actual kennels are a later addition to this structure, which, based on its large south windows, may have originally been intended as a schoolroom or hall.
