Description
The former dog kennels with a yard wall on the south side is an outbuilding dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed from coursed squared pink gritstone and features a pantile roof with an eaves course of stone slates over the kennel area. The structure is a single-storey, four-bay range with an added two-storey bay at the rear of the second bay. The yard wall at the front stands approximately 2.5 metres high.
The original doorway in the first bay is obscured by a lean-to yard shelter and is designed in a Gothick arch with interlaced glazing bars in the overlight. The windows in bays two, three, and four have similar pointed chamfered surrounds with imposts, with bays two and three retaining remnants of the original interlaced glazing bars. There are inserted doorways with single block lintels between bays three and four and at the far right. A brick ridge stack is located between bays three and four. The yard wall includes a doorway with a large lintel, likely inserted, to the right of centre, and features chamfered copings.
Inside, bay four contains a set pot and flue against the left wall, along with a built-in cupboard in the end wall. The kennels were likely constructed by the Slingsby family of Scriven Park, who were known for their locally famous pack of fox hounds. It appears that the building also housed a bothy for the keeper at the right end. The two-storey bay was added at the rear in the 19th century, possibly when the range was repurposed for other uses, and lean-to shelters were built along the inside walls of the yard. At the time of resurvey, the building was in a derelict state.
