SCRIVEN THE GREEN (north side) Old Scriven Pear Tree Cottage

GV II

House. Mid-late C18 with C20 alterations and restoration. Coursed squared pink gritstone, C20 pantile roof. 3 storeys, 3 bays with 2-bay rear wing. Quoins. Inserted C20 glazed door in slender door frame between bays 1 and 2. Small-paned side-sliding sash windows throughout, ground floor has large 2-light side-sliding sashes and fixed-pane window to centre. First floor has 3-light sashes flanking 2-light sash . Top storey has three 3-light sashes, that to centre probably inserted. Some with cement lintels; the lintels to the third storey, left and right, are keyed and probably original although possibly repositioned. Banded end brick stacks. Interior not inspected at resurvey but reported to contain the remains of inglenook fireplaces to gables and a kitchen fireplace in the rear wing. Similar in style to Wheelwright Cottage (qv), the top storey is said to have been used as a linen weaving workshop but the Slingsby Estate Sale Catalogue of 1965 shows only the central window on the second floor, suggesting that the top storey was originally without any windows on the south side. Included for group value. B Hutton, "The Houses of Scriven Green", 1979.
