Description

Pear Tree Cottage is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century, with some alterations and restoration made in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared pink gritstone and has a 20th-century pantile roof. The building has three storeys and three bays, along with a two-bay rear wing. It features quoins and an inserted 20th-century glazed door set in a slender door frame between the first and second bays.

The cottage has small-paned side-sliding sash windows throughout. On the ground floor, there are large two-light side-sliding sashes and a fixed-pane window in the center. The first floor has three-light sashes flanking a two-light sash, while the top storey features three three-light sashes, with the central one likely being a later addition. Some windows have cement lintels; the lintels on the third storey, to the left and right, are keyed and probably original, although they may have been repositioned. The building is topped with banded end brick stacks.

Although the interior was not inspected during the resurvey, it is reported to contain remains of inglenook fireplaces in the gables and a kitchen fireplace in the rear wing. The style of Pear Tree Cottage is similar to that of Wheelwright Cottage. It is noted that the top storey may have been used as a linen weaving workshop, but a sale catalogue from the Slingsby Estate in 1965 indicates that only the central window on the second floor existed at that time, suggesting the top storey originally had no windows on the south side. The cottage is included for its group value.
