Description

1 and 2 The Kennels in West Saltoun is a house dating from the later part of the 18th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure that has been converted into flats and is situated at a road junction. The exterior features harled pointed rubble with painted ashlar dressings.

On the south elevation, the three bays are grouped towards the center, featuring a fanlit doorway and regular windows. The north elevation includes a circular stairblock at the center, where a former window has been altered to serve as a doorway, complete with a fanlight and a stone stair. Another former window has been blocked with brick, and the stairblock has a conical roof. To the left, there is a timber mullioned bipartite window inserted at ground level, and a small window is located close to the stairblock on the right. The first-floor windows are in the outer bays, with an additional window by the stairblock on the left.

The east elevation has a small attic window in the gable head and features a 12-pane glazing pattern in the sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes skylights. There are large end stacks that have been repaired with brick, and the ashlar coped skews have rolled skewputts.

The retaining walls, likely from the 18th century, are made of rubble and are coped with rubble, featuring pedestrian gateways.
