Description
West Lodge at Saltoun Hall, dated 1881, is a single L-plan gate lodge with a later extension to the west. It is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked creamy pink sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings, chamfered reveals, and a base course. The original south elevation consists of three bays, with a doorway located at the re-entrant angle in the center, sheltered by a gabled porch. This doorway has panelled two-leaf doors and a two-pane fanlight above. To the outer right, there is a bipartite window, while the left side features an advanced gabled bay with a four-light canted window under a piend roof, which includes a dated panel. The later extension is harled and set back to the outer left. The east elevation also has a canted window similar to the one on the left. The lodge has plate glass glazing in its sash and case windows, along with decorative timber barge boarding and kingposts, eaves brackets, and purple slates on the roof. A pheasant weathervane sits atop the porch, and there are decorative gutter fixtures along with the original gutterhead by the porch. The gatepiers consist of two square ashlar piers topped with cavetto corniched caps and pawn finials.
