Description
Saltoun Barley Mill dates from around 1710 and consists of a three-storey and a two-storey former millhouse that has been restored and converted back to residential use by N Groves Raines after 1970. The building is constructed from harled rubble with ashlar dressings and features chamfered and rounded edges.
The mill has a rectangular plan with a piend roof and two widely spaced bays on each long side. There are doorways at ground level on each side, along with a window and two smaller glazed openings facing the courtyard. The upper storeys contain windows in both bays, with the window above the courtyard doorway being enlarged. The southwest elevation has windows at the first and second floor levels, and there is a two-faced tablet sundial located under the eaves at the west corner. A broad set-off wallhead stack is situated on the northwest side.
The drying kiln is positioned at a right angle to the mill and former millhouse, in the re-entrant angle between them. It has lower eaves than the mill, with recently inserted windows and a segmental pend added on the courtyard side. The piend roof features sweeping eaves, and the kiln vent was replaced during restoration.
The former millhouse is a low two-storey gabled block with three bays, featuring a central doorway leading to the courtyard and an additional doorway above that is accessed by a timber forestair. The flanking bays contain windows, with smaller windows on the first floor. The north elevation also has three bays with a central door that is currently blocked and converted into a window, flanked by smaller windows. Unfortunately, a wide French window arrangement has been inserted. Regular windows are present on the outer left and at the first floor. The west gable features a stone, pentice-roofed former ingleneuk set in the re-entrant angle with the drying kiln, which includes a small window and a first-floor window.
Adjoining the north gable of the former millhouse is the former cartshed, which has a pedestrian doorway that sensitively replaces the original cart entrance to the courtyard, along with a flanking window, while the remaining elevations are blank. The glazing pattern includes multi-panes and four-pane sash and case windows, as well as some casement windows. The mill and kiln are covered with grey-green slates, while the millhouse and garage have red pantiles. The millhouse features a west end stack, and the building has ashlar coped skews with beak skewputts.
