Description

27 and 28 Market Place is a building dated 1749, featuring four storeys and five windows. The front is made of hard greystone, with similar material used for the rear dressings. It has ashlar stone with chamfered quoins, sill strings on all floors, and a modillion cornice. The roof is double pitched, covered in slate with kneelers, and there are brick chimneys. The second and third floors have sash windows with late glazing, while the first floor has modern casement windows. The windows are framed with architraves, which are eared on the third floor.

On the ground floor, there is a central doorcase with a pediment and a pulvinated frieze, leading to an eight-panel door with six raised and fielded panels and two glazed panels at the top. Flanking the doorcase are two wide modern shop fronts, with a recessed entrance to the left. The rear elevation, facing Back Row, is imposing, constructed of coursed rubble with hard greystone raised and chamfered quoins, cill strings, and window dressings. It features large central staircase windows on three landing levels, each with segmental heads and keystones. Most windows retain their original glazing bar sashes.

There is a rainwater head marked "M.H." over "1749" and a mask on the distributor below. The ground floor has three architraved doorcases, one of which is lower and blocked. Below the stair windows, there is a two-part flat mullion opening, with one side containing a six-panel door. St Andrew's Church, along with the listed buildings in the Market Place, forms a group, with Nos 8, 10, and 16 being of local interest.
