Description
The building at 1 Market Square is a house dating to approximately 1812. It is a three-story structure built with cement-rendered stone and originally had a tiled roof, now double-gabled with a valley feature. The roof has flat stone verges and prominent, plain kneelers. A mid-19th century shop occupies the corner of the north side, featuring three windows with glazing bars. A cornice extends over the fascia, and the original shutter slides remain. The west front showcases a moulded brick eaves cornice and a plain band at the second floor level. There are four sash windows with glazing bars on each of the first and second floors, all set in plain reveals. A plate glass window is visible on the ground floor to the right of the shop window. A single-story stucco extension on the northeast corner provides the main entrance, featuring a covered doorcase with pilasters, a frieze exhibiting honeycomb rustication, and a substantial cornice. The entrance door is panelled and has a rectangular window above it. The north return displays the remains of a plat band above the ground floor with one window on each floor, featuring glazing bar sashes with cambered heads. The south return similarly has a plat band over the ground floor, with one flush-framed glazing bar sash window on the first floor and one on the second. The building is set apart as a detached building on the northeast side of the Market Square and is part of a group that includes numbers 36 to 40 Church Street, Mill Lane, and all other listed buildings within the Market Square.
