Description
The Crown Public House is a late 17th century, two-storey building that is partly timber-framed and constructed of stone. It features a steeply pitched roof covered with early tiles in two colors and has two hipped dormers. The building has late brick chimney stacks and is cement rendered at the front, which covers the timber-framed elevation while retaining a wooden eaves cornice and a continuous moulding above the ground floor windows.
On the first floor, there are three unevenly spaced windows with late leaded casements. The central entrance is framed by a 19th-century wooden doorcase that has a triangular pediment supported by plain consoles and a dentil cornice, with a six-panel door. To the left of the entrance, there is a wide window with four early 18th-century single hung sashes, and to the right, a three-light sash window with equal-sized lights. A large wrought iron sign is positioned above the center of the first floor.
At the rear, there is an early 18th-century timber-framed gabled extension. The former Market Room retains remnants of an inglenook, and there are braced beams in the room above. Additionally, there is a mid-19th century two-storey brick extension to the northeast, which appears to have been built for use as a courtroom on the first floor.
The Crown Public House is part of a group that includes Nos 36 to 40 (even) Church Street, Stratford House, Mill Lane, and all the listed buildings in the Market Square.
