Description
11 Market Square is a former King's Head Inn, dating from the early 17th century with later alterations. It is a low, two-storey house featuring a steep, early tiled roof, brick verges, and kneelers on the south gable, along with two brick chimney stacks and two hipped dormers. The walls are cement rendered. The windows consist of wooden casements set in stucco reveals, with three two-light and one three-light window on the first floor. On the ground floor, there is a two-light window to the left of the entrance at the south end, followed by a three-light and a four-light window. The entrance features a wooden doorcase with two plain pilasters and a hood supported by two shallow cut brackets. The door itself is impressive, with four fielded panels and two incised panels. Inside, there is a large inglenook fireplace with a fine four-centred arch lintel that has mouldings dating to around 1600. The building is part of a group with Nos 36 to 40 (even) Church Street, Stratford House, Mill Lane, and all the listed buildings in Market Square.
