Description
Nos 12 and 13 Market Square is a two-storey stone house from the late 17th century, constructed with coursed rubble in alternating large and small courses. It features a deep raised band between the storeys and a steeply pitched early tiled roof with three hipped dormers, along with late brick chimney stacks. The eaves cornice is dentilled.
On the first floor, there are four widely spaced windows that date from the late 18th century, consisting of alternating single-light and two three-light sash windows set in moulded wooden cases with small plain cills. The south end of the ground floor has the house entrance, accompanied by a three-light sash window on the left and a single-light window on the right. The stone heads of these windows have sloping sides and curved tops, which, along with a raised keystone, give them a crown-like appearance, similar to those at No 48 High Street.
The doorway is adorned with a well-crafted moulded eared architrave, featuring a carving of long leaves that spread out and down from a boss with a putti's head above a carved keystone. The panelled door consists of four fielded panels and two incised panels, topped with a rectangular light. Above the entrance, resting on the raised band, is a rectangular plaque inscribed with the letters I.A.M. (possibly for Joseph and Amelia Malpas) above a heraldic shield, with the date 1790 below.
At the north end of the ground floor, there is a double-fronted shop with glazing bars, followed by a wide doorway with a moulded architrave and keystone. The doors are of a later date. At the rear, a timber-framed gabled extension, which was formerly a pin factory, can be found. Inside, there is a late 18th-century chimneypiece styled after the Adam brothers.
Nos 36 to 40 (even) Church Street form a group with Stratford House, Mill Lane, and all the listed buildings in Market Square.
