Description
Number 16 on Market Square is a two-storey building with a slate roof and modillioned eaves. The front is made of red brick and dates from the later 18th century. It features three sash windows on the first floor, which are set in narrow cases that are almost flush with the wall. These windows have flat arched heads with keystones and stone sills supported by two small brackets. The windows are unevenly spaced, with two located towards the south end. The ground floor has similarly spaced openings, including an early 19th-century three-light window to the left of the entrance and a wide single light on the right. The simple doorway is topped by a late pedimented hood on cut brackets, and the door itself has four fielded panels and two incised panels. At the rear, there is a series of brick outbuildings, including a bakery. Number 16 is part of a group that includes numbers 36 to 40 on Church Street, Stratford House, Mill Lane, and all the listed buildings in Market Square.
