Description
Stratford House is an early 18th-century building that underwent significant alterations in the late 19th century, during which it was greatly enlarged to the south. The house has two storeys and an attic, constructed of brick with a stucco front featuring vermiculated quoins. On the first floor, there are three windows, one of which is a blind window in the center. The windows are sash style with late glazing. The entrance features a wide doorcase with pilasters and a dentilled entablature, leading to a four-panelled door with the top two panels glazed. The eaves are adorned with a small moulded arcaded corbel table, and the roof is tiled with three hipped dormers and two brick chimneys. The gables have high verges. A large pilastered porch is located on the southeast side, which is part of the later additions that create a large yard of brick buildings to the northwest, behind Ousebank Cottage. Stratford House is part of a group with Nos 36 to 40 (even) Church Street and all the listed buildings in the Market Square.
