Description
40 Church Street is a two-storey stone house rebuilt after a fire in 1736. It has an 'L'-shaped plan and features a front made of diapered brick, along with some later repairs. The eaves are higher than those of the adjoining No 38, but the ridge of the steep old tiled roof aligns with No 38. The house has brick verges and kneelers on the southwest side, as well as brick chimney stacks. There are two hipped dormers and two windows on both floors, with a late bay to the right of the entrance. The windows, except for the bay, are glazing bar sashes set in reveals with cambered heads and painted cills. The plain wooden doorcase has an open pediment supported by cut brackets, and the six-panel door features two glazed panels in the center with the rest being fielded. A wooden sundial with a moulded frame is located in the center of the first floor, inscribed with "W(illiam) M(ead) Tempus et ignis omnia perdunt Apr. 1739. H. A. Fecit." There are also two-storey brick and stone tiled outbuildings that form a small courtyard, accessible from Mill Lane. The group of buildings from Nos 36 to 40 on Church Street is associated with Stratford House on Mill Lane and all the listed buildings in the Market Square.
