Description

This is an 18th-century two-storey house located on the north side of Market Square in Stony Stratford. The building is rendered with pebble dash and has a Mansard roof, retaining its original tiles. A hipped dormer window is centrally positioned on the roof. The eaves feature a cornice decorated with modillions. The first floor has three sash windows with simulated glazing bars. The ground floor has a central entrance flanked by three-light sash windows on either side, all topped with large lintels and keystones. The doorcase incorporates two-panelled pilasters and an open pediment supported by consoles, covering a blind, semi-circular fanlight. The entrance door is six-panelled, with fielded panels. A two-storey addition to the left, originally number 25, has a late slate roof and contains one window on each floor: a glazing bar sash window on the first floor and a three-light casement window with a cambered head on the ground floor. 26 Market Square forms a group with numbers 36 to 40 Church Street, Stratford House, and Mill Lane, as well as the other listed buildings in Market Square.
