Description
The building known as Pant is a Grade II listed memorial located in the center of Market Place, dated 1901. It commemorates William Angus Temperley and replaces Sir Richard Allgood's Pant from 1703. The monument is made of red sandstone and features four fluted Ionic pilasters topped with tented pediments. At the top is a small cupola with a consoled drum and a large gilt cross. The space between the pilasters is adorned with low relief vegetation. The quadrangular base includes copper plaques, one of which is inscribed with a poem by local poet W. W. Gibson, while another bears a dedication, and the remaining plaques display the arms of Hexham and Northumberland. The drinking fountain is no longer functional. St Andrew's Church and the other listed buildings in the Market Place, including Nos 8, 10, and 16, create a group of local interest.
