Description
14 Market Place is a house built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, which incorporates the remains of the Church of St Mary and features later ground-floor shops. The building is made of painted brick with stone lintels and has a Welsh slate roof.
It is a mid-terrace structure with a rectangular plan, standing four storeys high and featuring two bays beneath a pitched roof with truncated gable chimney stacks. Each of the upper floors has two windows, all of which are unhorned sliding sashes: the third floor has four-over-eight windows, while the second and first floors have eight-over-eight windows. There is also a central two-light horned stair window on the first floor, with four-over-four sliding sash windows. All windows are adorned with flush stone lintels and projecting sills. The ground floor features a central part-glazed panelled door set in a stone surround, flanked by late 19th-century shopfronts. Each shopfront has two fascia brackets on panelled pilasters and recessed entrances with panelled and glazed doors.
Inside, there are remains of the north arcade of St Mary's Church, including a stone arch pier and a fragment of a pointed arch that was previously visible at the top of the stairs leading to the first floor.
