Description
The Humshaugh War Memorial is located on the south side of the main road, to the west of the village, and is situated within the buffer zone of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire (Hadrian’s Wall) World Heritage Site. This monument is made of Heworth freestone and stands approximately 6 meters tall, designed in the form of an obelisk with a square base that rises from a slightly tapering plinth. The plinth is set on a low step.
On the front face of the obelisk, there is a rectangular cartouche featuring a Tudor rose in each corner, which bears the inscription "TO THE/ MEMORY/ OF THOSE/ WHO FELL/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR," with the years 1914 and 1919 displayed above and below the inscription, respectively. The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the front face of the plinth, organized by regiment, while the names from the Second World War are recorded on the right face, beneath the dates 1939 – 1945.
