Description

Linden House is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, originally built as a pair of bastles, that was remodelled in the 18th century and further altered with a rear wing added in the later 19th century. It is constructed of rubble stone, with cut dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The overall layout is a T shape.

The south elevation has two storeys and attics, with five irregular bays. The central gabled section features a canted bay with two windows above and one to the attic, all with four-pane sashes. The upper windows are set within raised stone surrounds with panelled jambs. The left section has a similar canted bay and a half-glazed double door in a moulded surround, along with four-pane sashes and two plate-glass sashes to the first floor, all again within raised stone surrounds with panelled jambs. The right section has a French window and twelve-pane sashes, all within chamfered surrounds. Coped gables with moulded kneelers and stepped, corniced end and ridge stacks are present.

The side elevations show the outlines of earlier, lower gables, with the one on the right having blocked stone-surround doors. The rear elevation displays a projecting central wing with windows in raised stone surrounds and panelled jambs. To the left is an 18th-century outshut with various sash windows, and to the right is a blocked first-floor window within an old chamfered surround.

Inside, the west and central parts of the main block feature walls over one metre thick. The south elevation demonstrates at least six phases of construction, displaying a variety of different fabric and quoin types.
