Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church built in 1818 by H.H. Seward. It is constructed of tooled ashlar stone and features a Lakeland slate roof. The church has a broad three-bay nave, which includes a west porch, a north organ chamber, and a small sanctuary. It exhibits Greek Revival proportions with minimal Gothic detail.

The exterior includes a chamfered plinth and buttresses that are set back at the corners of the nave and between the bays on the south side, topped with moulded details. The moulded eaves cornice adds to the design. The west end has three steps leading up to the porch, which features panelled double doors set in a pointed arch, with hollow-chamfered gable coping above. There are pointed lights in the returns and flanking pointed-arched windows, along with a circular window above. A bellcote is present on the gable, featuring a tall pointed opening and hollow-chamfered coping.

On the south wall of the nave, there are three 2-light windows with Y tracery, and two similar windows on the north side, as well as in the projecting central organ chamber. The east gable is adorned with a cornice and a cross-gabled turret that has a blind lancet. The lower sanctuary contains a three-light east window with intersecting tracery and a circular opening beneath the gable, which also has hollow-chamfered coping.

All windows are set in double-chamfered surrounds with hollow-chamfered hoodmoulds. Inside, there is a four-centred chamfered arch leading to the sanctuary, box pews located at the front and in the side aisles, and some marble memorial tablets. The church also features creed and pater boards, along with two hatchments (one for George III and another for Greenwich Hospital) displayed over the west door.
