Description

Hopewell House is a house, formerly the headmaster's residence for a nearby school. It was built in 1839, as indicated by the date on the lintel. The house is constructed of squared rubble stone with tooled ashlar quoins and dressings. It has a Welsh slate roof.

The single-story, two-bay design features a prominent central porch with a six-panel door and a two-pane overlight, set within a moulded surround that includes a flat-pointed head and hoodmould. The lintel above the door is dated and inscribed with a scripture text. Flanking the porch are two-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds, each containing a twelve-pane sash. The eaves are supported by moulded corbels. The gables are coped with moulded kneelers. Two ridge stacks stand on each side, each with paired octagonal shafts that have moulded capitals and bases.

On the returns, there are matching two-light attic windows. The rear elevation includes a contemporary outshut and a porch with a boarded door.
