Netherton School

Netherton School is a school building dated 1846, located in Nedderton. It is constructed from roughly-squared stone with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a roof of large blue slates. The building is designed in the Tudor-Gothic style.

The south elevation features six bays and is mostly single-storeyed, except for a two-storey porch located in the third bay. The porch has a moulded plinth and stepped buttresses, along with diagonal buttresses and a first-floor string. It includes a renewed glazed door set within a moulded four-centred arch that has a hoodmould. Above the door is a canted oriel with a two-light window and a brattished cornice, along with a tablet displaying the monogram of the Earl of Carlisle, all beneath a coped gable with moulded kneelers and a finial.

The main part of the building features two-light windows with moulded surrounds that hold small-paned casements. The gables are coped and have moulded kneelers and finials. The porch has a taller cross-gabled roof with a ridge stack that includes two diagonal and one square-set shafts.

The returns of the building each show a four-light transomed window, with a pointed window in the gable above. The rear elevation displays an outshut on the left and a parallel two-storey wing on the right, which has a datestone on its left return and a right end stack with twin diagonally-set shafts and a moulded cornice.
