Description

The gate lodge to Hartford Hall, built in 1873, features the initials A.E.B. (Augustus Edward Burdon) in a shield on its left side. Constructed from ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and white brick stacks, this single-storey building has two wide bays. It has a chamfered plinth and a central four-panel door with a fanlight, set under a moulded four-centred arch with a hoodmould. Above the door is a raised block with relief carvings of an eagle and a pelican, which support an urn finial. The lodge includes canted bay windows with plate-glass sashes in moulded surrounds and brattished parapets. An indented eaves cornice runs around the bays, supported by moulded corbels. The gables are coped with moulded kneelers that carry globe finials, and the end stacks have been rebuilt. The left side of the lodge features a date panel in the gable, a plate-glass sash window in a moulded surround, and a similar window in the rear wing to the left. To the far left, there is a flat-coped screen wall backing the outbuildings, with the coping ramping down on the left side.
